Sunbathers at the coastal town of Arroyito in Andalucia, Spain, were left covered in handkerchiefs after a man fled the scene after having unprotected sex on the popular beach, according to Spanish news agency EFE. He was described as a “poor plumber” and the motive to whom he provided the handkerchiefs was not specified.
According to reports, the beach was initially closed after one witness heard a woman screaming that he was raped by a man who was chasing her from a strip of public benches. The man fled but returned with a second handkerchief and hid in a café as police attempted to arrest him.
The beach had been a popular spot for vacationers from the nearby town of Estepona and was surprisingly empty after the warning had been issued.
The 31-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with rape and sexual harassment on Monday evening. On Thursday, while sitting in a holding cell, the suspect reportedly attempted to urinate on himself and attempted to start a fire. While police managed to hold him in the jailhouse, the suspect was eventually taken to the hospital where he reportedly became sick and collapsed. He has been in custody since Monday.
